One of the commitments of the Integral Research Center is to support current students and faculty. If you are currently a graduate student and would like to take an online course in Integral Research to support your studies please contact us about options. If you are faculty at a university or college and would like to include integral research in a course you are teaching let us know so we can be of service.

John F. Kennedy University on campus:
A two-quarter (i.e., 6-month) course

INTEGRAL RESEARCH A

IPP 5051; Fall Term
Instructor: Sean Esbjörn-Hargens PhD
Department: Integral Studies

This course is designed to expose you to the foundations of Integral Research and to have you begin a research project that you will complete in the companion course (Integral Research B). To begin with we will explore the history and concept of research design and you will identify the topic you want to research through six distinct methods using 1st, 2nd, and 3rd person approaches. Next, we will explore the tradition of Action Inquiry and how it supports Integral Research. While we are doing this you will continue to develop your topic and a strategy of research. Finally we will learn about the emerging field of Integral Research. Students will complete half of their project including the 1st Person section of that project through autobiographical writing and self-assessment and part of the 2nd Person section through a taped interview that will be transcribed and coded.

INTEGRAL RESEARCH B

IPP 5052; Winter Term
Instructor: Sean Esbjörn-Hargens PhD
Department: Integral Studies

This course is designed to further expose you to the foundations of Integral Research and to have you complete the research project that you began in the companion course (Integral Research A).  To begin with we will explore the history and traditions of qualitative research design and you will further situate your topic in the six distinct methods you are using.  Next, we will continue to explore the process of interviewing and coding the text. Issues of validity will also be addressed. Time will be spent exploring in detail the contours of 1st-, 2nd-, and 3rd-person approaches. Students will be expected to: finish conducting an interview and transcribing it word for word, participate in their topic in a concrete way as a participant observer; conduct a 10 question survey of 20 or more people related to their topic, and analyze their topic in relationship to one major system (e.g., education, politics, ecology).

INTEGRAL RESEARCH

HHE 5200
Instructor: Dr. Joel Kreisberg, DC, MA
Department: Integral Studies

Integral methodology merges 1st person, 2nd person and 3rd person perspectives.  Each perspective involves unique modes of inquiry and respective research methodologies.  In this context, research is the means of acquiring new knowledge and the method for validating that knowledge and mode of inquiry. Validity serves to keep research authentic and reproducible.  Understanding the structure, language, and function of research is the goal of this class.  Students will be exposed to a variety of research methodologies within the context of integral theory, focusing on health care.  Knowledge and comprehension of integral research will come through application and analysis of key concepts and measures.  Students gain insight and experience using vital tools for a career in holistic health care, understanding the importance of research by participating actively in a heuristic research project.

INTEGRAL RESEARCH

ITH 5101; Fall Term
Department: Integral Studies
Instructor: Sean Esbjörn-Hargens Ph.D.

This course is designed to expose you to the foundations of Integral Research and to have you design a multi-method research project proposal, using Integral Methodological Pluralism that you could execute. To begin with we will explore the history and concept of research design and you will identify the topic you want to explore through different methods using 1st, 2nd, and 3rd person approaches.  Next, we will explore each major zone and how it supports Integral Research. We will do this by studying the historical context for each zone as well as actual research projects conducted using the methods associated with each zone. While we are doing this you will continue to develop your topic and a strategy of research. Finally we will reflect on the emerging field of Integral Research. A particular emphasis will be placed on Integral Methodological Pluralism, post-metaphysics, and the relationship between epistemology, ontology and methodology. Students also have opportunities to practice applying Integral Theory to aspects of their own disciplines/professions.

The course is divided into 11 lessons or units. Each lesson will begin on Monday of each week but will be released (or made accessible) on the Saturday before. The first lesson is an overview of and introduction to the context of Integral Research. Lesson two through nine deal with each of the eight zones. Lessons ten and eleven reflect on the meta-view of integral research and allow a chance to catch up and put the final touches on your proposal.

There will be three conference calls scheduled throughout the course to provide voice contact and synchronous exploration of the topics. Calls will be recorded and posted for students who were not able to join.
